Is Quake Champions still updated?

Status checked Steam News 1.31 announcement + Bethesda 1.31 FAQ

No. The 1.31 Point Release on 23 September 2026 was the game's final version, and Bethesda's own announcement closes the question: “No additional content updates are planned at this time.”

That sentence is the whole answer, so the rest of this page is about what 1.31 actually contained and what would have to happen for the answer to change. Status verified 24 September 2026.

The announcement frames the update as a transition: “Today's update marks a new chapter for Quake Champions as we transition the game from a free-to-play service to a paid application on Steam. Along with 30 Seasons worth of content to enjoy, all Champions are now unlocked for everyone, and most vanity content is available to equip.”

What 1.31 changed

This is the last patch the game will receive, so its contents are the permanent shape of the build.

Gameplay and systems

  • Ground presence unified: how long weapons, armor shards, Stroyent, Blood Punch health, souls and flags remain on the ground was standardised to 20 seconds, with dropped items blinking near the end of the timer. This is now the authoritative value for item timing.
  • Callvote rules were defined: available with four or more players, three votes per player, resolved with F1 and F2.
  • Weapon accuracy UI added, so per-weapon hit rates can be read in game.
  • Enemy and ally outlines gained a BOLD option.
  • Adaptive FPS Stabilizer added to the graphics options, alongside a fix to the FPS Limiter.
  • Threaded Input added, and network traffic was reduced by cutting redundant packets.
  • Level cap 999, with a 24-Hour Haste bonus XP every ten levels and profile level now shown on the scoreboard.
  • The Learn section was rebuilt to load from local web files instead of a remote service.

Bots

The patch notes carry a full Bot Improvements block: bots are marked Level 0 on the scoreboard, no longer aim perfectly for five seconds after an ability is fixed, stop treating their own totems and turrets as enemies, recognise incoming rockets and dodge them, dodge sideways less predictably, adapt their movement after taking damage, and manage their own health including retreating from fights they cannot win. Teams of three or more bots that are losing also gain a mechanical skill boost. Full detail is on the bots page.

Maps and Champions

  • Lockbox: item layout and spawn-point fixes.
  • Tower of Koth: split into large and small variants, with FFA, TDM and Instagib using the large version and Duel, 2v2 and Unholy Trinity using the small one.
  • Ranger — Dire Orb: collision radius reduced from 1 m to 0.6 m (about 40%), splash damage now falls off with distance down to 50%, and destroying another player's orb refunds 50% of its cooldown.
  • Assorted fixes to other Champions, audio behaviour, spectator controls, game modes and datacentre selection.

Datacentres

Multiple datacentres were merged, and players are advised to read Playlist Queue stats rather than judge a region by raw ping alone.

What happens to the old season content

The content produced during the service era — Champions, outfits, vanities, icons, nameplates and podiums — is included in the paid build rather than being retired. Bethesda's wording is “along with 30 Seasons worth of content to enjoy”, and “most vanity content is available to equip” for every owner.

The exception is third-party entitlement items such as the AMD Ruby Nyx skin, the Twitch Rocket Launcher, the Nvidia Pulsar Railgun, QuakeCon Belts and Golden Crowns: these are hidden from the Customization list unless the account already owned them, which means they can no longer be obtained. /skins/#ruby-nyx explains the Ruby Nyx case in full.

Where to watch for changes

  • Steam News for app 611500 — the feed that carried the 1.31 announcement, and the fastest first-party channel: store.steampowered.com/news/app/611500
  • Bethesda's 1.31 FAQ page — the migration reference, including Microsoft Store instructions.
  • quake.bethesda.net — the official game site.
  • SteamDB app 611500 — build and changenumber records, useful for spotting a patch that never appears in a news post. See the SteamDB page.

What would change this answer

This page's conclusion flips only on a new first-party announcement, not on community speculation, a datamined build, or a spike in players. Concretely:

  • A Steam News post or Bethesda post describing new content, a new season, a sequel, or a content revival.
  • A new build appearing on SteamDB with a changenumber after 39139861 and a corresponding announcement.
  • An official statement reversing the retirement of the Microsoft Store edition or the paid-only model.

Absent one of those, treat any page claiming Quake Champions receives regular updates as out of date. For how the frozen state affects matchmaking and daily play, continue to is Quake Champions dead and player count.
