The store listing asks for 40 GB of available space, and that is the only figure the publisher publishes. A community report puts the actual install closer to 34.87 GB, which is a different kind of number — a measured install instead of a reservation. Both are below, with the distinction made explicit. These do not contradict each other, and they must not be mixed:
- 40 GB is the number to plan with. It is what the publisher guarantees the game will fit inside, including future patch headroom, and it is what you should have free before starting the download.
- 34.87 GB is a single player's measurement of what the installed game occupied. It carries no guarantee, and it can differ between machines, patch states and storefronts.
- Neither figure is a download size in the strict sense; the compressed download is smaller than the installed game, and Steam reports it separately in the client.
If you have exactly 35 GB free, do not interpret this page as permission to proceed. Clear 40 GB and treat anything less as a gamble.

Platform and connectivity
- Windows only. The store API reports
platforms.windows = truewith macOS and Linux false, so there is no Mac or Linux build to size. - An internet connection is required to play. Every mode is online, including custom games against bots, so the connection line in the requirements is not optional.
- A Bethesda.net account link is required. The store listing carries a third-party account notice for this.
- An SSD is recommended but not demanded. The recommended spec asks for NVMe storage, which matters more for load times and asset streaming than for frame rate.
Does the size matter for the purchase decision?
Not much, but know what you are agreeing to: the game is a single ~40 GB reservation with no live-service cadence adding content on top. Because Bethesda has stated that no additional content updates are planned, the install size should stay near its current value rather than growing over the years the way live games do.
